While varicose veins are a much more common condition in women, men can also have issues with them too. Because vein issues seem like a much less prevalent problem for men, they may put off treatment or not recognize that varicose veins are beginning to form. Here are some things to look for when it comes to varicose veins as well as ways to prevent them.

Signs and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

It’s possible that you could have varicose veins and not experience any pain. Some signs you may have varicose veins include veins that are dark purple or blue and veins that appear bulging or twisted and almost cord-like.

Some painful signs and symptoms may include:

  • An achy or heavy feeling in your legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs
  • Increase in pain after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Itchiness around one or more of your veins
  • Changing in skin coloring around a varicose vein

How to Prevent Varicose Veins

It’s difficult to completely prevent varicose veins from occurring but there are some ways to reduce the risk of developing them in the first place or getting additional ones. These suggestions help you to treat current varicose veins as well as preventing new ones from forming:

  • Exercising
  • Watching your weight
  • Eating a high-fiber, low-salt diet
  • Avoiding high heels and tight hosiery
  • Elevating your legs
  • Changing your sitting or standing position regularly

If you do notice some of these signs and symptoms and are experiencing pain, there are treatment options available. You will likely begin with a vein screening to determine the level of severity of your vein troubles. If you do need treatment, your options range from sclerotherapy, which involves a chemical being injected into the vein to laser treatments. In more severe cases you may need to opt for surgical procedures, but we can determine that later down the road.
