Pregnancy is one of the most joyous times for many expecting mothers and is literally quite painful for other ones. If you have been experiencing varicose veins while you’re pregnant, you know just how painful and irritating they can be. So, what can you do while you’re pregnant to help get rid of those veins?

Exercise

One of the best things you can do for your emotional, physical, and vein health while you are pregnant is to get some regular exercise. With the approval of your ob-gyn, activities like walking and biking are great for increasing your blood circulation and helping ease your varicose vein symptoms.

Rest Your Legs

Standing for long periods of time can sometimes contribute to varicose veins— especially when you’re pregnant. If you stand for a living, try to take frequent breaks to elevate your legs and give them some rest.

Avoid High Heels

If you’ve ever needed an excuse to put your high heels on the highest shelf in your closet, now is the time. The extra pressure on your legs and feet while wearing high heels aren’t going to do your veins any favors. Try ditching your heels and swapping them out for some new tennis shoes or flats.

Compression Hosiery

Some types of pregnancy hosiery have some built-in compression in them that will help with varicose veins without reducing your circulation too much. If you need help picking out some compression stockings, contact our office and always ask your ob-gyn as well.

Schedule a Post Pregnancy Appointment

Because there isn’t much that we can do as far as treatments while you’re pregnant, we encourage our patients to schedule a post-pregnancy appointment. Depending on your health and whether or not you are breastfeeding, will help us determine what treatments we can do afterward. Treatments typically include sclerotherapy, laser ablation, and radiofrequency ablation.
