If there’s one thing (or several things for that matter) to know about varicose veins it’s that they aren’t only unsightly but they’re also painful as well. To help you spend your new year without the pain and discomfort of varicose veins, we at Southwest Vein and Leg have created a list of a few resolutions that you can make.

Lose Weight

Losing weight isn’t just good for your self-esteem but it’s also good for your varicose veins as well. Typically, when we see a patient who has varicose veins,w e encourage them to lose a little bit of weight. Extra weight can place a lot of pressure on your veins which may worsen them or darken them. When there is a lot of pressure on the veins it prevents blood from flowing into the heart which causes it to puddle and pool in the veins; resulting in varicose veins. Although losing weight won’t get rid of existing veins, it will help prevent existing veins from worsening in appearance.

Exercise

Exercise won’t just help you lose that extra weight but it’s also really good for your blood circulation which can prevent your varicose vein symptoms from worsening. When starting a new exercise plan look for one that has a lot of cardio in it; that way you really get our heart rate up.
